Benefits of AbsSometimes it seems almost as if half the people in the gym are only there because they want to tone up their abs. While it may not be necessary to obsess over your abs as these people seem to do, it should definitely be a regular activity as having highly developed abdominal muscles has benefits far beyond just their attractive appearance. If you workout to get defined abs you will become a part of the statistics showing that people with strong midsections tend to live longer, have a higher chance of surviving a car wreck, and will be less prone to back injuries.

Your abs are crucial for the protection of your midsection. Consider that the anterior (frontal) surface of your midsection is the only body cavity not protected by bones. Not only that, but it also contains some very important organs (stomach, large and small intestines). So having highly developed abdominal muscles helps ensure that this important area is protected inside from whatever beating you may be taking on the outside.

Before you get started on improving your abs, you should know exactly what it is that you are trying to accomplish. Be aware that regardless of whether you can see them or not, you have to have some development of your abs to start with. Referring back to the last paragraph, if you didn't have somewhat developed abs to start with, then your abdominal body cavity would be unprotected. If you cannot see your abs without sucking in your stomach, then your main goal should be burning off the layer of fat covering your abdominal muscles. If you can already see them, then you can work on perfecting your abs with toning and strength exercises.
